Special Report on the “The Asian Age”

Recently, the American Chemical Society's exclusive news weekly (ACS Weekly), the International Science Daily (Science Daily), the Asian Age (The Asian Age), the International Wisdom Oral (Tooth Wise) and other international media, have reported the latest development of our school's light teeth Non-destructive whitening technology. The technology was developed by the Biomaterials Laboratory of the Institute of Translational Medicine of Nanchang University (team leader: Professor Wang Xiaolei) and the affiliated dental hospital of Nanchang University (team leader: Professor Liao Wei) and other institutions. Nanchang University is the only research and development unit.

he core accomplisher of this technology

In recent years, more and more people choose to whiten their teeth because the color of their teeth is not ideal. Currently, more than 30% hydrogen peroxide and high intensity blue light are used in clinical tooth whitening. High concentration of hydrogen peroxide is highly corrosive and oxidative, although it can effectively whiten, but its action is too intense, which can easily induce a series of problems, such as enamel demineralization, tooth sensitivity, gingival stimulation, cytotoxicity, and acute pulpitis and other adverse reactions. Therefore, it is urgent to find a new type of biomedical material that can respond to visible light, but at the same time has low stimulation and low toxicity, so as to achieve non-destructive whitening of teeth in a real sense.

In response to this topic, Professor Wang Xiaolei and Professor Liao Wei of our school first proposed to use PDA to encapsulate and modify the surface of nano-TiO2 to excite electrons under visible light to produce active oxygen with strong oxidative properties, thereby efficiently decomposing pigments. The effect of tooth whitening, the pH of the material is alkaline, non-corrosive, almost no damage to the surface structure of the enamel, low cytotoxicity, and better safety than the hydrogen peroxide bleach commonly used in clinical practice.

Immediately after the introduction of the technology, it attracted a lot of attention from many international media. The only official news media of the American Chemical Society, ACS Weekly wrote a special article on the topic of “a safe and effective method of whitening teeth” and pointed out: “ Nanchang University has developed a visible light-responsive photocatalytic material for tooth whiten, which subverts the traditional peroxide whitening, which is not only effective but also milder."

“Science Daily” also reported on the related content, pointing out that “The Nanchang University team has developed a new whitening material that is less harmful to teeth in response to the defects of existing oral whitening materials.”

"Tooth Wise", an internationally authoritative oral professional organization, also made a special report on related research, and once again stressed: "The existing tooth whitening materials have certain damage to the teeth, and the research from Nanchang University has effectively reduced. The risk of this injury.” Dr. Amin, the chief scientist of the British Innovative Dental Medical Co., wrote a letter to apply for a technology share, hoping to bring the technology to the UK as soon as possible.

The core highlight of this study: no significant damage to the enamel surface after whitening by Nano-TiO2@PDA.

Professor Liao Wei said that in future research, we will further optimize the way we use it and systematically evaluate the long-term biosafety and whitening effect of this material.

Professor Wang Xiaolei said that this technology is another breakthrough in the field of light health materials technology. At present, the first round of financing has been opened in China. It is worth mentioning that in the National LED Engineering Center of Nanchang University (Mei Luyao), Qingzheng Company (Liu Yang), the research team of Dr. Yu Fen, Ye Fanglin and other related personnel, we have prepared a batch of built-in High-efficiency LED chip light-emitting toothbrush samples not only improve the technical threshold, but also facilitate the popularization of this technology, so that more people can have healthy and bright white teeth more conveniently.
"Finally, do a little spoiler," Professor Wang Xiaolei said with a laugh. "We have achieved some interesting experimental results in the light precise hair-generating technology (not necessarily hair, eyebrows and eyelashes can also be oh) of our special subject area. Please look forward to it."
