Special research in the group (zinc oxide)

    1. Research history of zinc oxide

The relationship between zinc oxide and the skin has always been very close. For example, zinc oxide can be used as not only a daily sunscreen material but also the main antibacterial agent during skin wound treatment (approved by Food and Drug Administration). Over the past 13 years, our research group has been committed to the synthesis and biomedical application of inorganic biological nanomaterials represented by zinc oxide, especially in the field of preparation of antibacterial materials with abundant accumulation of experience. The research content of zinc oxide during 2007-2019 includes the construction, antibacterial mechanism and application of structural composite antibacterial materials represented by zinc oxide. The research content are specifically as follows: first, zinc oxide with bacterial / cell recognition ability was constructed; Then he antibacterial mechanism of zinc oxide was systematically explored from the crystal plane, arrangement, and atomic layer distribution levels; Finally, the medical applications of zinc oxide composite antibacterial materials were studied in cardiac implantation inflammation treatment ,wound healing and other biomedical fields.

    2. Research related to zinc oxide for wound healing

    (1) Completed work

①A PEEK-ZnO dual biomimetic material inspired by cicada and catkins was constructed to improve the antibacterial performance of implant materials

Inspired by cicadas and catkins, catkin-like PEEK structures were added with catkin-like ZnO nanosheets to construct a PEEK-ZnO bionic dual structure. The PEEK-ZnO biomimetic dual structure was used as a model implant. Later experiments and in vivoanimal experiments showed that this dual biomimetic structure could simultaneously provide less bacterial adhesion, broader antibacterial spectrum and longer antibacterial durability. At the same time, the improved implants are ideally biocompatible. More importantly, the preparation process of the dual bionic structure can be completed by a simple, economical and fast hydrothermal chemical reaction.

② Dual light responsive porous ZnO modified silk accelerated wound healing

Dual light (yellow light and near infrared) responsive porous ZnO was synthesized to modify silk to accelerate wound healing. The material has a low band gap and can be effectively excited by yellow light. In vitro and in vivo experiments verified that the material had good antibacterial properties and excellent biocompatibility. In addition, animal experiments showed that the prepared silk thread could not only prevent wound infection and accelerate wound healing, but also exhibit unique photodegradability.

    (2) Work in progress

The band gap of conventional zinc oxide is relatively high, which is about 3.2eV. Ultraviolet light (partly through blue-violet light) is required to effectively excite it, but ultraviolet light and blue light can cause different damage to human skin. For the sake of safe applications of zinc oxide in the biomedical field, it is necessary to further explore zinc oxide with lower band gap in order to be activated by more moderate longer wavelength visible light (such as yellow-green light), which could also stimulate the antibacterial performance of zinc oxide more efficiently as well. In view of the above problem, we have improved the defects of zinc oxide by doping other materials such as carbon, effectively reducing the band gap of zinc oxide, as well as endowing it with excellent yellow light response characteristics. Studies have found that the use of yellow light and microcurrent stimulation are beneficial to wound healing and repair. In addition, for the treatment of acute wounds caused by snake venom, our zinc oxide composites also show good therapeutic effects.

    (3) Outlook for zinc oxide research

Investigate the application of self-powered zinc oxide materials in the treatment of wounds in order to achieve the effect of convenient treatment of wounds without the help of external power; optimize the zinc oxide synthesis method to improve the performance of zinc oxide, and combine self-power and photo-assisted therapy to further apply zinc oxide to the treatment of chronic skin wounds.
